German Cockroach
This is the most common type in the country, and it's the one you’re likely seeing when you discover several at a time. This is the one species of concern, it gives all other cockroaches a bad name.
There inside your house right now, more than likely if you don't have a professional pest control company coming on a regular basis. They come into your home in paper bags, used furniture, and appliances, and cardboard boxes. Moving from room to room laying eggs along the way. One female just needs to mate once to have tens of thousands of offspring in a year.
HOW TO IDENTIFY GERMAN COCKROACHES:
- Six spined legs
- Horizontal stripes behind their heads
- Light brown or tan bodies
- About half an inch in length
AMERICAN COCKROACH
This species inhabits more places than palmettos. When you see a very large cockroach, it's an American cockroach. It's the largest house infesting cockroaches. Both genders have wings and can fly (glide) over short distances. They prefer the outdoors like in mulch piles but will come indoors in search of food and water from crumbs, pet bowls and even small amounts of water left standing. Sinking in through loose weatherstripping on doors, or your garage.
HOW TO IDENTIFY AMERICAN COCKROACHES:
- Six spined legs
- Straight antennae
- About three inches in length
- Dark brown/reddish bodies
- Two wings that extend beyond their body length
ASIAN COCKROACH
Easily mistaken for German cockroaches, their stronger fliers and would rather live outdoors than indoors. TBeen in Florida since the 1980s, and found throughout the Southeast. Like American cockroaches, you'll find them in shaded areas, gardens, and mulch piles. They are unusually attracted to light, you'll find them heading for the glow of light bulbs, TV, and computers.
HOW TO IDENTIFY ASIAN COCKROACHES:
- Nearly identical to German cockroaches, but with longer wings
ORIENTAL COCKROACH
This species, also known as the waterbug (as they live in damp areas) or black beetle (as their bodies are mostly dark), is a large species, and adult males being 18–29 mm, and adult females being 20–27 mm.
HOW TO IDENTIFY ORIENTAL COCKROACHES:
- It is dark brown or black in color and has a glossy body.
- The female has a somewhat different appearance from the male, appearing to be wingless at a casual glance, having non-functional wings just below her head. She has a wider body than the male.
- The male has long wings, which cover three-quarters of the abdomen, and are brown in color, and has a narrower body.
- Both of them are flightless.
